The Team Expertise Assessment Tool provides a customized assessment of a team’s task relevant knowledge and expertise and helps the team members understand how to use that expertise to improve team performance.  Recent team research has shown that a well-developed team expertise system in a team can significantly improve team performance and development.

The Team Expertise Assessment Tool focuses attention on expertise relevant to team-specific tasks and explicitly links the assessment results with barriers and drivers of the team’s task performance.

How can the Team Expertise Assessment help a team?

  • The Team Expertise Assessment is a customized tool designed to assess the knowledge and skill needs specific to the team’s environment and task.
  • The assessment process increases team member awareness of potential team resources and weaknesses thus improving team communication.
  • The assessment establishes a benchmark and methodology for future team assessments.
  • The assessment process is based on an empirically validated methodology and sound social science.

What types of teams will benefit from the process?

The Team Expertise Assessment tool is valuable for any continuing team with decision-making authority.  What advantage does the team expertise assessment have over other team assessment tools?

  • The assessment is customized to meet the specific challenges of your teams.
  • The process requires a minimal time commitment by team members.
  • The assessment is well-suited for comparative analysis between teams.
  • Because the results are relevant to the team task, the assessment is ideal as a team development tool.
  • The Team Expertise Assessment focuses attention of team members on the unique skills and relationships of other team members.

The Team Expertise Assessment Process

The team expertise assessment process includes five parts: design, administration, analysis, feedback, and (optional) future reassessment.  The first four steps can be completed within four weeks as scheduling permits. Step 1: Customized Design

We develop a customized assessment tool through phone interviews with selected organization members.  Once the interviews are complete, we create the assessment tool for your organization. Average Client time commitment: 15 minutes each for 4-5 organization members. Step 2: Survey Administration

The assessment is administered to team members using either web, e-mail, or hard copy surveys.  Average Client time commitment: 20 minutes for each team member.

Step 3: Analysis

We combine individual survey responses to create a customized team expertise assessment.  The team assessment identifies team strengths, barriers and critical development issues.  The time frame for analysis depends upon the number of teams completing the assessment.

Step 4: Feedback

Feedback includes a team feedback session facilitated by John Austin, Ph.D.  During this session, team members discuss the results and identify specific action strategies aimed at improving team performance.

Step 5: Follow-up

Once the first assessment process is complete for a given team, future assessments for that team can be administered for benchmarking and progress assessments.
